Wash Day Diaries | Testing Flaxseed Gel as a Detangler
Today is wash day, and honestly, I’m dreading it. My hair is tangled—like, really tangled—and I don’t have any of my usual detangling products on hand.
Over the past few years, I’ve been learning my 4-type hair and experimenting with different products and routines to find what truly works for me. One thing I’ve learned is that detangling can make or break everything—from wash day and styling to length retention and overall hair health.”
I usually detangle in the shower after shampooing with a generous amount of conditioner, and that method rarely lets me down. But today, I decide to switch things up and detangle before washing with flaxseed gel.
The first thing I notice? My curls are popping—and I mean beautiful. The definition is amazing. But once I start working through my hair, I realize the slip isn’t quite enough for my level of tangling. It definitely helps, but it doesn’t give me the same effortless glide that conditioner does.
To be fair, my hair mats pretty quickly, especially if I wear it loose overnight or don’t detangle thoroughly before wash day. So today’s experience may be more about me playing catch-up than the flaxseed gel itself.
That said, I can confidently say flaxseed gel is still a great detangler. It’s affordable, easy to make, and a great option to have on hand. My usual choice is African Pride Moisture Miracle Pre-Shampoo, which has been a holy grail in my routine for years. I probably would have used it today if I had felt like running to the store.
Instead, I use what I already have, and that’s one of the biggest advantages of flaxseed gel. Sometimes the best product is the one that’s already in your kitchen.
For now, my verdict is this: flaxseed gel gives me beautiful definition, decent slip, and a budget-friendly alternative when I’m in a pinch. But when it comes to minimizing breakage and tackling stubborn tangles, detangling with conditioner in the shower is still my favorite method.
That’s the beauty of a natural hair journey—it’s all about learning what works for your hair, one wash day at a time.
Have you ever tried detangling with flaxseed gel? I’d love to hear about your experience in the comments.
